My mother has worked in nursing homes for nearly 30 years now. For as long as I can remember, she would come home from work everyday and have a new story of mistreatment of staff by administration and neglect of residents by staff. My mother has said countless times that she will never willingly go into a nursing home when she gets older because she knows what goes on in them all too well. This was something very important to hear and see for me

And these are the reasons why children and/or grandchildren who stay home to take care of their elderly should get paid. They get far better care, are happier and costs way less money. You sure as hell aren't going to get $100,000 a year or what Medicaid pays, ($50,000), but something. And no amount of money can buy peace of mind you and your loved ones receive.

I have visited a step-familly member in nursing home. And a good one, as in every staff has only 5 people to watch per day, there is every day activity, ect (also : Belgium. Not the same as the Nightmare US medical world is) And ... even that ... is nightmare. It's litteraly place where people go and wait to die, some have no familly visit because familly need to work, very far sometime, even with the nicest staff in French we sometimes use the word "Mouroirs". Because as a society, we are so fucking sick with productivity and work, we fail to do what litteral baboons and wolfs do : taking care of ours elderly, disabled and sick. We are litteraly the worst fucking mammal with social interaction on this planet.

I would like to take a moment to continue on John Oliver's point on keeping people out of long-term care facilities all together. Even with laws and regulations that could be passed to support in-home care, 98% of the homes in the US are not up to snuff when it comes to save living conditions for our elders. There is a geriatrician, Dr. Bill Thomas, who aims at revolutionizing care for older adults and create safe, affordable housing. If Last Week Tonight would want to do another segment on Long-Term care in the (hopefully near) future, I would encourage to share a spotlight on Dr. Bill Thomas, his company Minka, and the MAGIC Project.

The normal number of people for one caregiver to look after in a properly staffed rest home or nursing home is between 5 and 10. Just to put into perspective how fucking insane it is for a single caregiver to be tasked with 22 people.

I’m working to become a CNA so I can work through college as I already have a lot of the skills from a high school class I’m in- I spend 8 hrs a week shadowing nurses and CNAs,,, and let me tell you- these men and women are heroes. Especially now with long hours, understaffing, difficult patients and families, sad stories all around u all day. That’s not even mentioning the immense physical toll it takes to be on ur feet all day, lifting and moving patients, and rushing around to keep everyone safe. We need to work to ensure that all facilities for the vulnerable are safe, comfortable. And we need to make sure those that take care of our residents are qualified and have the proper etiquette, as elder abuse in mismanaged facilities is FAR too rampant and underreported. CNAs and nurses are incredible people, and they deserve proper wages to ensure that their sacrifice is rewarded.

I have to say John... You've been in the USA for a few years now, and you haven't caught on to a very big point. Time and again, population after population, you've asked the country to show it cares. You've also left off the rest of the question, does the country care about X people more, or money more? The USA, money is the ONLY thing that matters, that rules, and that enacts change. If you can make "caring" for people profitable, you can create a new industry. Aside from mega churches. Private hospitals. Schools, colleges, sports leagues, assisted care, banking and investment... Actually... I'm not sure there's a market left to corner. :/

The issue is caring for people IS profitable... for society, but often not as much for the individually powerful entities within it as just being parasites.

I worked as a CNA at two different BrookDale facilities. Honestly it was one of the better alfs and nursing homes I worked at. One place would run out of diapers(they called them briefs) or gloves on a daily basis. I’d complain about it and the response I got was because I am a make I just need to suck it up and deal with it. One time a resident’s son came in with a gun and forgot to take the gun home. This might not result in a lot of concerns from the reader but anyone who has worked with folks that have Alzheimer’s or some sort of dimension knows some folks mistake certain things for others, therefore a well meaning resident inflicted with this awful ailment may very well try to distribute pez candy not realizing that this is gun they are holding. Another time at a non-brookdale facility they had someone brought in just to be arrested an hour later. Reason? Apparently they had been admitting themselves into nursing homes so that they can go rape a bunch of residents. You realize how understaffed these facilities have to be in order for that jerk to be successful in his evil goal? That same one had a resident that started a small fire in the hallway. Luckily thought we were able to put it out. This other time a CNA, who was a friend of mine, was asked to get bleach from the shed to clean off a bed. She went to the shed, which wasn’t air conditioned and had poor ventilation. The bleach exploded into her eyes, the fire department was called and they cleaned out her eyes and then fined the facility. The facility suspended the CNA without pay, despite that she was following directions, WHILE DANGEROUSLY UNDERSTAFFED! The same facility had a resident with HIV and refused to let the CNAs know because that might alter the care “that’s none of their business they are just $9.50 employees anyway.” This was mid 2010s. And employees were already getting seriously ill multiple times a year. Many times without health insurance due to needing to work more hours. (CLEARLY NOT SAFE FOR THE RESIDENT either!) This does a number on you when “your goal is to keep the residents safe.” Rings loudly in your head because you take your responsibility seriously. Often, and the more I study people the more I think this is a control thing, we’d be told, “there is a complaint against you and we are doing an investigation if it turns out you are fine you get paid but you aren’t going to be able to call out even if you are sick. If staff had a Union that legitimately looked out for them they could easily tell potential residents and their family, “hey this is a great place, this is a terrible place, if you love your husband you will look at one of these facilities that I just applied to work at. CNAs and Nurses tend to gravitate towards facilities that give good care to their residents, they got into the field because they wanted to give care but when so much of your job is trying to get a computer fixed because of a glitch in the system where you chart what type of care you did... I mean it doesn’t take a genius to know that takes away time that could and should be spent with residents. Guess which one is more likely to result in disciplinary actions. Oh also this may go without saying but if you want to put your loved one in a facility what you should do is volunteer at the facility first, get to know the staff and befriend them then ask them after you’ve built up rapport over a number of weeks or months. The week after I left brookdale one of the CNAs (one I complained about and the one in charge of training other CNAs was caught with a resident’s cock in his mouth). The weeks leading up to that one of my resident’s wives was complaining to me that off my shift her husband was getting neglected and staff refused to take care of Him when he soiled himself and he seems to fall every time she left since moving him to the more intense care of this nursing home. I told her about another nursing home that all the CNAs and nurses are trying to get working there and they are supposed to be a great place to work. There is a common trend where CNAs want to work is the Nursing homes that don’t overload their staff, and take care of their residents. When we have to answer questions like “why was my dad denied a breakfast this morning before your shift started?” See we didn’t go for school to pick up the slack of our superiors. CNAs and nurses honestly need to study how to go on a strike properly because that maybe the only way that these nursing homes are going to tighten up.

My brother has pretty severe disablilities. My parents are concerned that when they pass, my brother will be a burden on the remaining children, and we might have to put in him in a long term facility. Either because of finances or because we wont be able to care for him ourselves. The conditions of these places terrify my parents so much that I know my dad works himself to an early grave just so they can leave money behind for him, so he doesn't have to go to a state run facitity. It hurts to think about the pain this causes my parents. It also hurts to think about my incredibly vulnerable brother being stuck in a place like that.

The problem with these homes is not that it is the care givers or employees fault. It is that it is a BUSINESS made and designed to be FOR PROFIT. It's like having a For Profit Hospital. Companies want to profit as much as they can and keep there shareholders happy while the residents and staff are the ones who suffer the most.

It doesn't help that you have insurance companies like Humana who scam the elderly out of their Medicare and replace it with managed care that when they actually need rehab to go home they cannot use at all. It is one of the most fucked up things about LTC. Insurance companies preying on the naïve conning them into thinking they are saving money without giving up anything, but actually replacing their Medicare coverage with nothing.

I do worry, though, how a pivot to community based care will effect the growing number of people basically having to structure their entire lives around elderly parents to the detriment of their own health and well-being. I'm disabled myself, mentally ill and arthritic, and I'm being pushed to break my body down taking care of abusive parents who still treat me like shit to this day. I can't send them to a home or an ALF for all the reasons listed, but frankly being paid to take care of them wouldn't make having to do it go down any easier.

We had to pull $10,000 from my wifes 401k to hire an Elder Care lawyer. Her father was in one of the better ones and sadly that saying much. This was to handle the medicaid part which long term insurance said we had to obtain and they would cover the rest. Medicare was looking to cover up to 7500 a month, where the long term insurance would cover the 2500 rest. Then covid hit and that claimed him. 'Murica. I have a feeling they sped up some older folks passing to clear beds because they had a waiting list. Also, many states say places can not kick out residents unless they have a place to go to take care of them, but you can be responsible for expenses.

I volunteered at a nursing home (with a lot of disabled residents) for a bit during middle school, and I want to cry imagining any of the residents in bad care. Many of them often got confused and had a few issues, but they were lovely people and deserve to live in a good environment that can cater to their needs. The staff should also be payed lots of money since while I don't regret working there, it could be a bit mentally tolling and I can't imagine doing the more difficult parts of the job EVERY DAY, especially since some of the residents would get into fights. Generally, nursing homes deserve better, both for the workers and the residents.

She tells me she’s in pain and I have to call the manager and then they finally do x-rays figure out it’s another UTI probably had like 20 in the last year, I FaceTimed her one day and her chest was sticking out she look like Rigamortus her body was all stiff and she started yelling at me like she was being held captive of course I called the manager come to find out they weren’t giving her any pain medicine she had told the doctor she wasn’t in any pain and they had it to where she had to ask for it it wasn’t just given to her so I got that taken care of it’s continuous so I’m always having to call to help. She said sometimes they change her and sometimes they just let her sit in it it’s a hit or miss she says she says the lady next to her she must have money because she always gets people over there looking at her she’s in a little 5 x 7 area with a curtain drawn so she can’t see anything three walls and the half the time she can’t remember how to turn on the TV so she doesn’t think she has TV. She said she’s been having very vivid dreams that she’s walking she can’t walk so she’s trying to Scooch down out of the bed I told management that and she ended up falling I hate nursing home she even told me before she went into the nursing home if she wanted me to kill her of course I was like no mom I can’t do that I’m gonna go to jail I got more stories than that will just leave it here they’re terrible places!

I’ve worked in elder care in Canada. It is just as bad. Public not-for-profit facilities are just as bad. People are just dumped off by their families and there isn’t enough staff. Our regulations are super lax. IMO families need to be caring for their loved ones as long as possible, and then go to hospice where there is larger staffing and regulation. Peoples don’t care enough about the elderly.

Why I offered to offer taking care of my grandparents when I came home to stay for a bit, so they could spend time with the great grand kids... The other issue is how little some people of that older generation lack respect for the younger generation, and still want to act like they are the parents... not the great grandparents... I say this from the perspective of a mother; who is constantly told by them as they are glued to the news how changing anything with the problems in the world is impossible, and any work done in the community is a waste of my time... Old people can be extremly difficult to care for sometimes.

The reason people walk off is while the doors have alarms, they are NEVER LOCKED which always baffled me. As someone who worked in a few care homes, both high class and ghetto, you always get a MINIMUM of 10 patients and usually at least half if not all are incontinent and a good portion are total care, meaning you need a minimum of 2 workers to perform and care. I worked in one care home on a unit of 31 patients, only 3 were cognitive. Every one was incontinent and at least 10 were feeders. Shifts there were 12hrs and we were always understaffed. This was last May too btw so covid was just starting. I worked the recovery hall one shift with about 20 patients by myself for 13hrs. I stayed an extra 2hr to help the night aide cause she was gonna be by herself. And very few care homes have memory units. Even the one that had a nice one, bumped a dementia patient to a main hall cause of medicare/Medicaid BS and that hall was a heavy hall, it had 5 total care patients alone and never had less than 14 patients on the hall. Because they count how many beds are full/available not how much care a patient will need. I am so glad I work at a hospital now because at least my patients get better and go home.
